Dr. George Baxter was a faculty member in the Department of Zoology and Physiology for over 30 years. He was a recognized expert on the fishes, aquatic insects, amphibians, and reptiles of Wyoming. He described the endangered Wyoming toad, a species endemic to the Laramie Basin, which is named for him: Bufo baxteri. He was Head of the Department from 1968 to 1971. This scholarship was established by family and friends of Dr. George T. Baxter, and is offered annually to recognize an outstanding undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral student in the Zoology and Physiology Department conducting research in fisheries, aquatic invertebrates, or amphibians.

This scholarship is awarded to outstanding undergraduates pursuing the WFBM degree with the fisheries option and to graduate students studying fisheries. Selection is based on scholastic excellence and evidence of a commitment to a career in fisheries biology.
