Pat and Stan Lowe Memorial Scholarship

Pat and Stan Lowe Memorial Scholarship

Neither Pat nor Stan Lowe were native to Wyoming but once each of them visited our state, residency soon followed. Pat, interested in pursuing a Master’s in Geology came from Boston. Stan arrived shortly after receiving a Juris Doctor degree from University of Nebraska to practice law with (Honorable) Preston T. McAvoy in Newcastle, WY. They met through mutual skiing friends, were married in 1959 and began their life together in Rawlins, WY where Stan had been elected the Carbon County Prosecuting Attorney.

Both of them had a passion for diversity of culture and the languages of the world while building relationships of mutual benefit. That combination began what would become a lifelong pattern and adventure of hospitality for exchange students from around the globe through various organizations. Pat and Stan’s first student was Italian born Rudi Bogni who arrived in Rawlins and subsequently explored the western U.S., backpacked the Wind River Range, skied Ryan Park and Graduated from Rawlins High School in 1965.

It is so fitting that this scholarship should be established at the University of Wyoming: Stan and Pat believed education was paramount in leading a fulfilling life; they supported, served or networked through UW Veterans Affairs, Geology Department and the UW College of Law for over 50 years, which by the way included teaching “Cowboy Joe” to dozens of exchange students during a home game.

Rudi and his wife Flo have never left their special place in the Lowe family nor have the people and state of Wyoming left their fondness. Reunions continued by either return visits to Papa and Mama plus siblings Robert J. Lowe and Meganne L. Acres in Wyoming or through hosting or connecting with the family on various travels through Europe. This scholarship honors the life Pat and Stan led by furthering the opportunity of education for others who pursue a more fulfilling life.

Impact

This scholarship is established by Rodolfo Bogni, on behalf of the Liber Stiftung Foundation, to honor Pat and Stan Lowe who were his host family as an international student in Rawlins, Wyoming when he was in high school. The Liber Stiftung is a small charitable educational foundation established to promote educational opportunities, from scholarships to fellowships in mathematics for women wishing to re-enter academia after maternity or after caring for elderly relatives, to schools for girls in Afghanistan, to support for apprenticeships for refugees. Our means are limited, but we aim for impact in overlooked areas of education.
