J. H. HANLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

John H. Hanley attended and graduated from the University of Wyoming with BS and PhD degrees in Geology. While at UW John became interested in early Cenozoic lake and river deposits in the Green River Formation of southwestern Wyoming, and his PhD dissertation involved detailed description of that formation’s fresh-water mollusks and its paleoecology. During his graduate work he spent a year at the U.S. National Museum as a Smithsonian Predoctorate Fellow. After obtaining his PhD from UW, John was hired as a research paleontologist by the US Geological Survey. He was in that role in Denver at the time of his sudden death at age 40. John’s father, Mr. John M. Hanley, was intensely proud of his only child and as an expression of his gratitude for the son’s educational experience at UW, he created the J.H. Hanley Memorial Scholarship to honor his son’s memory. Special thank you to Dr. Don Boyd, John H.
